Monday I headed west to visit pastors and supporters. My first stop was to see Eric Molicki, an old friend now pastoring Murrysville Community Church. We had a wonderful time catching up. That evening I had dinner with Andrew and Christy Stockdale, Lehigh alumni, who are searching for a good church in the Pittsburgh area. It was great to see them.
On Tuesday I drove to Grove City. My first meeting was with the president of Grove City College to discuss possibly placing an RUF minister there. We had a splendid conversation, and I was very impressed to learn how extensively students there are cared for spiritually. We think RUF could play a role on that campus, but it is probably not our top priority.
While I was in town, I had lunch with Benjamin. Then I met in succession with the two PCA pastors closest to Grove City. I thoroughly enjoyed talking with these men. They believe that their presbytery would support an RUF ministry at Grove City College, but they think that presbytery would be more enthusiastic about a ministry at Slippery Rock University – a larger state school which is just as close to these churches as Grove City College is. The spiritual need at Slippery Rock is far greater than at Grove City. We agreed to pray about these things and stay in touch. Pray with us about Grove City College and Slippery Rock University.
Back in Pittsburgh, Tuesday night I had dinner with Scott Magnuson, a local elder and former chairman of the RUF national oversight committee. It was good to catch up on things, and his insights on some immediate issues were valuable.
Wednesday morning I met with the two interns at Pitt, then had lunch with the RUF committee chairman for Pittsburgh. We’re still considering whether we can launch RUF at Frostburg University this year, and we left with a list of things for each of us to do. My last meeting was with Callie Miller, the female staff at Pitt. Then the long ride home. Pray for God to guide us as we work on RUF at Frostburg University.
On Thursday I drove to Philadelphia and had lunch and dinner with seminary students who are considering RUF. Both find RUF very attractive, but both are in other good churches. It is challenging to find a way into the PCA while affirming the value of their present churches. They could use your prayers, too.
I’m flying to Denver now for RUF winter staff training. As always, I am directing the track for 2nd year ministers and meeting 1-1 with the men I supervise. I’ll also be doing a good bit of teaching myself. It’s a great week, but exhausting. Pray for stamina and for God to be at work among us.
